Building Code Changes

Building Codes may vary from state to state.

1. Rake rail height
In recent years, all stair balusters were designed to work on 30" rake rail heights. When building codes changed the rake rail height to 34", most stair parts manufacturers continued to offer the same balusters they had offered in the past, without making the needed adjustments to allow the balusters to properly align. Building codes mandated a change, but the problem of alignment remained. Now, for the first time since the change in the building codes, there is a solution that provides perfect baluster alignment with the industry-first, patented Crown System.

2. Sphere Rule
With the decrease from 6" to 4" in the Sphere Rule, many installations of two balusters per tread will not pass the new, stricter building codes. When the 4" Sphere Rule is combined with the new 10" Tread Run Rule, most stair installations will require three balusters per tread.

3. Tread Run
The new tread run requirement of 10" means that very few stair installations will meet code unless three balusters per tread are used. When the new minimum tread run requirement of 10" is combined with the 4" Sphere Rule, it mandates new solutions. Only the Crown System has been able to address the problem and offer an industry-first solution.
3. Tread Run 4. Riser Height

4. Riser Height
The riser height change has the possible effect, in some installations, of requiring one more tread in the installation. This means that many house plans will need to be revised to allow more overall run, one more tread and one more riser.
